1) Egg chorion was found to play an important role in the protection of embryos from toxic substances contained in the host plant of a monophagous Drosophila, D.sechellia.
2) Comparisons of amylase genes among D.melanogaster and related species provided evidence for natural selection.
3) Interspecific mating between Drosophila simulans females and males of closely related species was shown to be controlled by a number of species-specific, semidominant genes.
4) Light dependent mating activity of Drosophila male was shown to be determined by male visual acuity and was wavelength specific. The optical property of photo-receptor cells in the compound eye is involved in the visual information about mating.
5) Courtship songs of two sympatric Drosophila, D.ananassae and D.pallidosa were analyzed. It was concluded that Interpulse Interval (IPI) is not important in species recognition between the two species.
6) Cuticular unsaturated fatty acids and other unidentified sex pheromones was seemed to control mate choice found between the black and brown strains of Drosophila elegans.
7) Parthenogenesis discovered in 3 species of ananassae complex of Drosophila was shown to be caused by a gene located in common on the right arm of the second chromosome. Pronuclear duplication was suggested for the mechanism of diploidization.
8) In several hymenopteran insects, injection of heterospecific sperm into an unfertilized egg resulted in hybrid embryos which, however, failed to develop until adults. Heterospecific transplantation of ovary showed that yolk protein of different species could support normal development.
9) Mutants of D.melanogaster that were defective in spermatogenesis and fertilization were isolated, and several genes necessary for sperm storage in the female and for pronuclear fusion after fertilization were identified.
