Research Abstract |
Issaikyo or Tripitika of Chinese canon means the complete collection of Buddhist scriptures, and usually it has scale of more than 5000 volumes. It started in 1638 to publish Issaikyo, putting the technique of wood block movable type printing in practice for the first trial in Japan. This project called "Tenkai-ban Issaikyo" or "Kaneiji-ban Issaikyo", because it was carried on according to the prayer of Priest Tenkai who was thekaisan(the founder of a temple) of Kaneiji Temple. Therefore, printing instruments of Tenkai-ban Issaikyo, for instance, wood blocktype or type case, had been handled down from generation to generation, exist at Kanneiji Temple Ueno. Tokyo. In our research project, by permission of the owner, we picked up wholesome goods from dust of hundreds years, blushed away, analysed woody materials, defined the quantity, classified and put in order for preservation. And for further particulars, we must refer you to the report we are going to publish. We would like to express our sincere gratitude to Kanneiji Temple and the persons concerned.
