Research Abstract

This study was a fundamental one for showing the informational conditions of tactile graphics which were easily for students who were bind to access them. It had two objectives ; (1) to show requirements for easy understanding of dotted or embossed graphics which were made by modifying visual graphics, and (2) to show requirements of the least additional verbal-information for supplement of information lost by modifying visual graphics.
On results of the study concerning in objectives (1), we found as follows : 1) Understanding of tactile graphics depended on developmental level of haptic perception in students, 2) Conversion to tactile graphics was effective in visual graphics with low familiarity, 3) Facial expression, movement and so on could be omitted in tactile graphics, 4) Whether was casy understanding in tactile graphics with side view or with front view was depended on each objects, and 5) Illusion of line length just like visual perception was also found in haptic perception and further study was necessary on it.
On results of the study concerning in objectives(2), we found as follows : 1) There were visual graphics with easy access for blind students which were only converted to verbal information but not to convert to tactile graphics, 2) The effects of categorical information as additional verbal-information was reduced in graphics with complex pictorial structure, and 3) Graphics with low familiarity was more fitted to explanatory information than to categorical information as additional verbal-information, and 4) The more modified in tactile graphics, the more effective the additional verbal-information detailed was.
