Research Abstract

The purpose of this project is to develop a new practical frame design method based on reduced model-frame inverse transformation. The following results have been obtained in this project.
1.A method is proposed for designing member sizes of a frame which would satisfy the design constraints under Level-2 design earthquakes. This method consists of two steps. In the first step, a shear building model is used and story stiffnesses and story strengths of the shear model are determined so that the designed shear model would exhibit a specified distribution of interstory ductility factors under the Level-2 design earthquakes. In the second step, member sizes of the frame are transformed from the story stiffnesses and story strengths of the shear building model based on the proposed shear model-frame inverse transformation. In this transformation, the total member weight may be minimized as well as the equivalent transformation of the restoring force characteristics in the story level.
2.A prototype of an interactive design system has been developed which enables designers to make decision on a computer display for better performances.
3.A design method without reduced model-frame inverse transformation has also been developed for building frames lower than 60(m) high. Constraints on story strengths as well as drifts and stresses are taken into account. The gradient projection method has been used as a tool for optimization.
4.A design method has also been developed for building frames with viscous or hysteretic dampers. A similar concept of reduced model-frame inverse transformation can be considered by introducing an appropriate parameter of equivalence.
