Research Abstract |
The final purpose of this study is to improve the acoustic environment in libraries and to construct the model of the desirable acoustic environment in libraries, based on the theory of soundscape and soundscape design. Therefore the author investigated the acoustic environmental awareness of library users by questionnaire, and surveyed the acoustic environment using the sound-level-meter in Urayasu-shiritsu-chuo Library, Chiba Prefecture as a case study. Next, the author investigated the existing acoustic environment of the libraries and the acoustic environmental awareness of librarians by questionnaire on the public libraries in 11 prefectures (Hokkaido, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Aichi, Osaka, Kyoto, Shiga, Fukuoka, Nagasaki and Okinawa). The comparative analyses of the libraries in each prefecture clarify that the environmental music is applied and the acoustic environment is positively considered in many libraries at Shiga and Hokkaido compared to other prefecutures. Finaly, the author clarified the characteristics of prefectural libraries. As a result, prefectural libraries desire to be quiet environmeut, adopt various kinds of measures for noise control, and no prefectural libraries adopt the environmental music.
