Research Abstract |
The Avant-Garde movement in art, at the beginning of the 20th century, gave rise to a radical change of art, as well as in the theory of representation. Taking into account its relation with changes in the political and social infrastructure of the Europe in 1920s and 30s, we intended to re-examine this movement in various genres such as literature, fine art or cinema. For this purpose, we have made research during three years, attaching importance especially to following points : (1) Examine the development of avant-grade art in areas such as France, Italy, Germany, Russia, China and Japan, before considering exchanges and interactions among them by comparative point of view; (2) Pay attention to the two correlative aspects of avant-gardism, that is, innovation against the tradition (repulsion against the past) and creation of new modes of art the influence of which can be ovserved even today (influence on the future) ; (3) Take into consideration developments in science and technology which aroused the interest of some authors like Cocteau and Inagaki Taruho in the airplane ; We have also taken seriously the cinema that had been newly formed ; (4) Mak analyses of the ideological context in order to shed light on the political and social dimension of avant-gardist movement. The final report of this research, entitled The Century of Avant-Gardism, was published in November 2001 at the Kyoto University Press. The title of each chapter is as follows : "Why the Avant-Gardism now?" (Introduction), "Avant-Gardism as Discourse" (Chapter I),"Avant-Gradism as Representation" (Chapter II), "From Modernism to Avant-Gardism" (Chapter III),"Avnat-Gardism in the History of Civilization" (Chapter IV). We have annexed the index of proper nouns and topics in the hope that it will clarify various connections between articles.
