| Research Abstract |
When my application to the "Kakenhi" fund was accepted by the Education Ministry, I intended to devote the three successive years to transcribing Sir Ernest Satow' s early autograph diaries ( 1862 - 1884). As I deligently pursued the transcription work, I got more and more ambition, so much so that finally I have succeeded in transcribing all the 39 volumes of Sir Ernest' s over 66 years. They are now kept at the Public Record Office, Kew Gardens, London, and of choice I have worked on the micro-filmed versions of his autograph diaires.
I have reported about the details of my research in the recently published booklet, but for one thing I may perhaps interest scholars of Sir Ernest Satow by referring to the List 1 (p.18), where the approximate numbers of the pages or leaves of each diary volume and those of my respective transcription texts are shown. The number of all the autograph diaries's pages or leaves put together is c. 9373, while my transption texts' sheets of paper numbers c. 6457. Indeed it was certainly a laborious work to transcribe that many autograph diaries into computer texts, but I feel much satisfied with this - May I call it? - an accomplishment.
The first part of the diaries relevant to Sir Ernest Satow' s stay in Japan during the most exciting period in our modern history is soon to be published by Edition Synopsis, and within the 5 years the later period diaries will be published successively.
