Research Abstract |
This study aims to make clear the problems a historical area has when it intends to promote the local economic development by using its historical townscape as tourism attraction base and at the same time to conserve and improve the townscape. As a case study we analysed the tourism in Chikugo-Yoshii and Yame-Fukushima, one of the Conservation District of Traditional Buildings, in Fukuoka Prefecture. The results of the analysis are as follows, (1) The project of the Conservation Areas of Traditional Structures and tourism design have a positive effect on each other, leading to the realization of better townscape and its conservation. (2) I made clear the process of development and problems of public projects for historical townscape conservation. in historical tourism areas. We have set up three measures of value of historical townscape : the value as cultural assets, as living environments and as tourist attractions, and, in the light of these measures, analysed public projects for historical townscape conservation. The result of the analysis shows that projects in Chikugo-Yoshii and Yame-Fukushima have been carried out with emphasis on the value as cultural assets.
