Research Abstract |
The Institute of Pacific Relations (IPR) started in 1925 as a pioneer orthodox International Nongovernmental Organization (INGO). We have evaluated it as a pioneer institution to today's PBEC, PAFTAD, PECC, ASEAN and APEC. The aim of our research project is to investigate the history on the IPR and to consider, from a contemporary standpoint, the relations between the IPR and today's INGOs. We are also contemplating the various issues regarding regionalism in the Asia-Pacific in the future. In our three-year research project, we have collected the IPR documents on Hawaii, mainland of USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand and have examined, from different perspectives, the international conferences hosted by the IPR. We have also studied the activities of the IPR international secretariat as well as the national councils in UK, Australia and New Zealand. The IPR had the support of many influential nongovernmental people who came from different nations with interests in the Asia-Pacific region. Though we have gone a long way to recover IPR documents, and used these documents to throw new historical light on this forgotten institution, there are still many topics to be explored. We want to report here our findings on significant themes and topics at the present time. Nevertheless, we have already started to collect additional documents on ASEAN, APEC and related organizations. Our project will continue to research the history and significance of the IPR and attempt to show its future relevance in the Asia-Pacific region.
