Research Abstract

特定領域研究「蛋白質分解-新しいモディファイアー蛋白質による制御-」(平成12年度〜平成16年度)が終了したので、その成果をとりまとめ、研究成果報告書を文部科学省に提出した。本研究のテーマとした細胞内の主要な蛋白分解システムであるユビキチン・プロテアソームシステム研究とオートファゴソーム・リソソームシステム研究は、研究期間の5年間に大きな進展が見られた。ユビキチン・プロテアソームシステム研究では、このシステムが広く生物・生命現象に関わることが定説となった時点で、一昨年ユビキチンの基質蛋白質への結合反応の発見についてノーベル化学賞が贈られた。本特定領域研究で得られた成果は、その後のこの領域の生物医学的研究の発展に、極めて大きな貢献をした。また、日本発信の研究であるオートファジー研究では、本特定領域研究チームの研究成果は世界最先端を行っており、平成17年度においても世界に注目される成果が出されている。
研究成果報告書の提出に加えて、この特定領域研究で得られた研究成果を社会の方々に広く知っていただき、より理解を深めていただくという趣旨で公開講座を平成17年12月24日に順天堂大学有山記念講堂で行った。「いきいきとした細胞、そして健康を保ために」というタイトルで、副題を「タンパク質分解の重要性」とし、5人の演者から世界トップレベルの研究内容をわかりやすく、面白く話していただいた。最後に5人の演者が登壇し、パネルディスカッションを行ったが、150人ぐらいの出席者の中から、次々と質問が出され、討論時間の30分はあっという間に終わった。細胞の中で蛋白質がつくられた後なぜ壊されなければならないか、蛋白質の分解が健康維持や病気の原因・進行にどう関与しているのかという疑問に対する科学的な説明は、かなり理解していただいたように思えた。蛋白質分解の研究領域が益々発展することを祈念する。
