Research Abstract

The results obtained are summarized as follows.
(1) Small scale experiments on thermal storage were carried out based on a similarity rule, which clarified the relationships between hydraulic head and water velocity, flow rate of discharge water temperature, moisture content and stored heat, hygro-thermal properties of the ground and fluxes, and the positions of the well. The results of the analysis based on the heat and mass transfer gave a good agreement with the measured results, thus the analytical model can be used for practical purposes.
(2) The temperature and moisture fields including unsaturated region were measured. An unsaturated moisture flow model formulated based on a moving boundary problem could predict the measured results.
(3) Based on the measurements of an existing building and ground, the efficiency of the thermal storage was investigated. An examination of the influence of the several factors such as soil characteristics, non-uniform ground strata revealed that the initial temperature distribution has a significant influence on a short term thermal storage, as expected.
(4) An optimal method of thermal storage taking into account the control of the building use side was clarified based on a genetic algorithm.
(5) Several problems in ground thermal system were identified and the strategies for practical use were proposed.
