Research Abstract |
The results of this research are as follows : 1. Analysis and simulation methods for photonic crystal circuits were newly developed : frequency-domain finite element method for the analysis of band structures in photonic crystals and of guided-mode properties in photonic crystal waveguides, and time-domain beam propagation method for the analysis of optical pulse transmissions in photonic crystal circuits. 2. A basic theory to treat various methodologies for controlling lightwaves in photonic crystal circuits was constructed : electro-optic, acouto-optic, magneto-optic, thermo-optic, and nonlinear effects. 3. A multiplexer-demultiplexer (MUX-DEMUX) based on photonic crystal, waveguide couplers was proposd, and its wavelength demultiplexing properties were investigated. The device size was expected to be drastically reduced, compared with the conventional one composed of dielectric waveguide couplers.
