Research Abstract |
Annual Incidence of acute encephalitis/encephalopathy among children is approximately 1,000-2,000 cases. The aim of this study was to investigate epidemiology, clinical features, virological studies, pathogenesis, treatment and prevention on 1. herpes simplex encephalitis, 2. neonatal herpes, 3. influenza associated encephalopathy, 4. SSPE 5. others diseases. 1. Herpes simplex encephalitis : We have shown that the relapse of the illness occurred frequently among children and insufficient treatment with antiviral agents was one of the important factors of the relapse. 2. Neonatal herpes : In cases with HSV type 2 infection, significantly higher amount of viral DNA was demonstrated in CSF, and CNS involvement occurred more frequently than type 1. Moreover, relapse also occurred frequently in type 2 infection. 3. AH3 subtype of influenza virus causes the acute encephalopathy more frequently in young children than the other subtypes of the virus. High concentration of cytokines was found in sera and CSF and damage of vascular endothelial cells was demonstrated. 4. In the treatment of SSPE, intraventricular injection of interferon alpha and ribavirin was done under the permission of Ethical Committee of Nagoya Univ., and growth inhibitory effects of the virus was demonstrated.
