Research Abstract |
The system we used consists of a Sagnac interferometer mounted of a fundus camera, coupled charged device (CCD) camera and a computer installed a soft-ware consisting of an acquisition and an analysis module. With this system, oxygen saturation levels in the fundus with a 35-degree view could graded between 0 to 100 at each point or pixel graphically. Applying different colors to different oxygen saturation values allowed a graphic representation of the values in the fundus. First, we applied this technique to patients with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) to evaluate and rank CRVO according to the severity of ischemia. The severity of circulatory disturbance was well shown by spectral retinal imaging (SRI) based on Fourier-transformation. The findings were ind accordance with those observed by fluorescein angiography. Areas of capillary nonperfusion and dye leakage in fluorescein angiography appeared in SRI in dark blue, which signifies oxygen levels below 40%. SRI also delineated decreased oxygen saturation levels in an areas not involved obviously with fluorescein angiography. Further we measured oxygen saturation levels in patients with primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) and normal tension glaucoma (NTG). SRI showed a marked decrease of oxygen saturation levels in the juxta-papillary retina only in NTG patients. NTG may have different pathophygiological background from that of POAG. SRI measurement is a promising technique not only studying pathophysiology of the retinal diseases, but grading those severity. SRI technique may explore further possibility in fundus imaging analysis.
