Research Abstract

It is important to know the anatomical relation between perivascular nerve fibers and blood vessels for the reconstruction surgery. The origin and innervating pathways of perivascular nerve fibers containing calcitonin gene related peptide (GGRP) around the femoral artery were examined by immunohistochemical staining combined with denervation methods and/or retrograde labeling methods.
CGRP-immunoreactive (CGRRr) fibers around the femoral artery formed a complicated network with numerous thin fibers branching from nerve fiber bundles in the perivascular connective tissue. These fibers were directly supplied from the peripheral nerves, mainly the femoral nerve, the genitofemoral nerve and the sympathetic nerve, which issued from the same segment (L1-L4 dorsal root ganglia) as the somatic sensory nerve fiber, although the innervating pathways to the femoral artery probably took different courses.
