Research Abstract |
The purpose of the present study was to evaluate associations between periodontal status, general health conditions and serum antibody titers for Porphyromonas gingivalis and Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitan, in a Japanese' population. 1314 subjects aged * 40 years were recruited in the study. Periodontal status was evaluated using the Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs (CPITN). Results of the general health examination used for the present analyses were age, gender, body mass index (BMI), systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP, DBF), serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total cholesterol (T-CHO), high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-CHO), triglyceride (TG), fasting blood glucose (FBG), and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, white blood cell counts (WBC), platelet counts (PC), smoking habits (S), amounts of smoking (pack-year), and ranks of Electro-cardiogram (ECG) diagnosed by physicians. Serum IgG antibody liter for Porphyromonas gingivalis fimbnal antigens (IgG.Pg.Fim.), for Pg whole cell antigens (IgG.Pg.whol.), for Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans whole cell antigens (IgG.Aa.whol.) of each subject was determined using Enzyme-Linked-Immuno-Sorbent-Assay (ELISA). The subjects were divided into 4 different periodontal groups according to their given maximum CPITN codes (max.CPITN-0/1/2, -3, -4 or -MS (missing sextant) subjects). The logistic regression analyses performed for 1068 subjects with excluding max CPITN-MS subjects revealed significant associations of max.CPITN-4 subjects with male sex (OR : 2.03), smokers (OR : 1.73), high DBF (OR : 1.27), large numbers of WBC (OR :1.24), high serum CRP level (OR: 2.39) and high serum IgGJ>」.Fim. (OR : 1.17), IgG.Pg.whol. (OR :1.54) and IgG.Aa.whol. (OR 1.19) levels The results of the present study demonstrated that there were significant associations between periodontal status, gender, smoking habit, DBP, WBC, CRP, IgG.Pg.Fim., IgG.Pg.whol. and IgG.Aa.whol. in the population examined.
