Research Abstract |
Objectives : The study provides appropriate community and general practice training programs of a clinical clerkship in community. Methods : Questionnaire study (cross-sectional study) was conducted to 5-year medical students. The questionnaire consists of medical institutions, contents and impressions of the programs and opinions on the community practice and the future before and after the clinical clerkship. We used Visual Analogue Scale for answering these opinions. Results : Response rates were 97% and 96% (2000 and 2001 respectively). Of students, 42% and 31% performed the clinical clerkship in hospital only, 22% and 14% did in clinic only and 36% and 55% did in hospital and clinic. All students experienced the outpatient management and at least one program about the community practices contained the public health and welfare services. The VAS scores (mean±SD) of "The programs were significant" were 77.3±24.3 and 86.8± 16.3 and these of "The clinical clerkship is necessary to be co
… More
ntinued" were 76.7±22.6, 86.0 ±20.4. These score were high, therefore the students appreciate the programs. The VAS scores of "The community practice has the vision for the future" after the clinical clerkship statistic significantly increased 7.4 and 8.2 from these before it and these of "The performance of the community practice is of value" statistic significantly increased 8.1 and 5.3 (p<0.05). These 2 items are related with the motivation to perform the community practice. From the results in 2000, the followings are recommended for the programs in 2001 ; (1) the clinical clerkship do in hospital and clinic, if possible, (2) the students experience as many programs of the community practice as possible. The VAS score of "The programs were significant", "The clinical clerkship is necessary to be continued" and "The community practice has the vision for the future" in 2001 statistic significantly increased 9.6, 9.2 and 5.7 respectively from these score in 2000 (p<0.05). The VAS scores of "The programs were significant", "I am confident of performing the community practice" and " It is not difficult to communicate with a official worker" of the students experienced 5 or more out of 9 programs that were community practices except outpatient and inpatient managements were 8.1, 15.1 and 11.8 respectively statistical significantly higher than these of the students experienced 4 or less programs (p<0.05). Conclusion : The community practice training programs of the clinical clerkship were good impression on the students and effectiveness for the motivation to perform the community practice. It is indicated that the effectiveness of community practice training programs of the clinical clerkship is improved by providing the programs recommend in 2001. Less
