Research Abstract |
Searching for construct of nursing economics, the investigators study the following 5 areas: (1)Analysis of course syllabus used at universities in US, (2)Analysis of textbooks used at health economic courses at universities in UK and US, (3)Analysis of references for health and diet arena, (4)Interview researchers in UK and US who study health economic arena, (5)Interview directors of nursing at hospitals in Japan. From two years of research, no clear conceptual framework of nursing economics was found not only in Japan but also in United Kingdom and United States. According to the course syllabus developed at universities in US, nursing major students study economic concepts through health economics or economic courses. Seven concepts have found from textbooks used at health economic courses in US:(1) Fundamental of Economics, (2)Methods of Economic Analysis in Health Care, (3)Labor Market and Education of Health Care Human Resources, (4)Health Care Delivery System, (5)Insurance System, (6)Government Intervention to Health Care, (7)Health Care Policy and its effects. From references of health and diet, there are no universal concepts regarding economic evaluation. Each researcher uses the term "economic evaluation" differently. From interview, there are no concept on nursing economics in UK. In US, because health care is based on free economic market, the priority issues are accounting and financial management in stead of developing the construct. Some researchers in US try to bring economic concepts into human caring. It is still in a developmental stage. From interview to directors, one of the main responsibilities for directors of nursing is to balance cost and quality of nursing care. The investigators have developed a conceptual model of nursing economics. The next step will be to implement the model into practice settings.
