Research Abstract |
I have carried out histrical researches on 'Chikaraishi' by visiting several western districts in Japansince1992, and got more than 30,000 pieces of information concerning the sizes and locations of various kinds of stone. As a result, I was to publish my research work based on 5,000 pieces of stone in the form of six books and 140 papers. Six books are as follows. 'Chikaraishi in Mie' (1998, Mie University Press), 'Chikaraishi' in Harima' (2001, Iwata shoin), 'Chikaraishi in Kyoto and Shiga' (2001, Mizuku shuppan), 'Chikaraishi in Osaka' (2002, Iwata shoin), Chikaraishi in Tokyo' (2003, Iwata shoin), and 'Chikaraishi in Nara and wakayama' (2003, Iwata shoin). I am now preparing for the publication of the book about Chikaraishi in Aichi and Shizuoka. I want to publish more books after classifying information from other areas. The local people were very helpful to me and they began to have more interest in Chikaraishi stones which were left unnoticed in their villages. In some places movements to preserve Chikaraishi are becoming active more and more. That is to say, Chikaraishi began to be rediscovered as cultural inheritace in the field of Physical Education History as well as in that of Folklore. Also, in some villages, Strength Contests by using Chikaraishi have been revived. In the past, such contests used to be very popular in most villages in this country. But now few people know about them. It would be a great loss for Japanese people to leave the local events neglected. So I think it necessary to take urgent action. I, Mr.Takashima the applicant, is the only person that has been studying Chikaraishi for 12 years among a lot of scholars of universities. I will keep doing this survey in wider area.
