Research Abstract |
This two-year project consisted of following parts : (1) survey of literature relating to major earthquake disasters in Japan and U.S., (2) review of Fukui Great Earthquake, (3) geological survey in San Francisco, (4) questionnaire surveys of citizens' preparedness to earthquake disasters in Fukui and San Francisco, (5) field surveys of natural disasters in Nagova and Tottori, and (6) construction of a disaster-database. (1) We collected the materials relating recent big earthquake disasters in Japan and U.S. (Fukui Great Earthquake, Hanshin-Awaji Great Earthquake, Loma Prieta Earthquake, and Northridge Earthquake) : articles, books, research reports, maps, and aerial photographs. (2) Review report on Fukui Great earthquake was published in February 2001. (3) Hattori surveyed the geological basement of San Francisco, and collected earthquake reports and geological maps in U.S.G.S. during the end of 2000 and the beginning of 2001. (4) We conducted questionnaire surveys of citizens' preparedness to earthquake disasters in Fukui area (April to June 2001), and in southern suburbs of San Francisco (August to December 2001). The data collected in the two areas were analyzed and the article on the preparedness by Fukui people was published. (5) Hattori conducted field surveys on the regional damage caused by natural disaster in Nagoya (2000) and in Tottori (2000). (6) The database of the materials collected through our two-year project is under construction to be open to the public. In March 2002, we published the research report which comprised our articles published on journals and the materials and data collected through our surveys.
