Research Abstract |
1) Field study of innovative efforts in collage physics education We visited physics departments in several different universities which are in process of teaching system innovations in order to study the planning processes and contents of the innovations. Reports on those site visits to physics related departments in International Christians University, Gakushuin University, Tohoku University, and Hiroshima University have been, or are going to be, published in the special "Reports on Site-Visit to Physics Departments" section created in BUTSURI, the monthly periodical of the Physical Society of Japan. 2) Study on problems in bridging between high school and collage education We organized discussion session inviting teachers from high schools and collages. Discussions were centered on continuity between high school and collage physics education, problems in recent trends among students of weakening in enthusiasm and achievements in learning. Summaries of the discussion were published in Physics Education in University, vol. 2001- 1. 3) Survey on physics education abroad A few of investigators visited Europe and Korea to attend international conferences on physics education and made survey on innovative efforts in different countries. Special attention was focused on the education material "Advancing Physics" developed recently by Institute of Physics in UK for A-level physics courses, roughly equivalent to Japanese upper high school and introductory cllage physics levels. Up to date and rich contents and versatility originating from combination of printed and CD-ROM media with internet connectivity are very appealing features of the material. We had a symposium, inviting the production director, Prof. Jon Ogborn, to discuss the content and the production philosophy and processes of "Advancing Physics".
