Research Abstract |
1) Introduction of a dedicated Web server and development of Web application software We introduced an appropriate environment for running Web-based video streaming system and creating learning material by combining a Web server and some database systems. The learning material as well as raw material has been available on the net. 2) Development of methods for digitizing audio and video material Rapid progress in multimedia authoring in these few years requires us to reconsider the method of digitization and storage we employed so far. 1) We found that an audio CD recorder was convenient to digitize the analog audio material in stock into AIFF format and to store it onto CD-R media. The AIFF data is ready for a quick conversion to MP3 data on inexpensive computers to be distributed on-line. 2) We have developed a similar quick method to convert recorded video to digitized video clips by a combination of a DVD recorder, DVD-R media, and computer software. 3) Re-digitization of video material we stored so far We started to digitize the original video material we created so far, which we had digitized in low quality several years ago and distributed on CD-ROMs, so that we can obtain new video material which is digitized in MPEG 4 format with higher resolution. The material will be a part of Web-based learning material as well as distributed as a library of copyright-free material on the net. 4) Development of a multimedia picture dictionary We realized that we needed a library of still images for Web-based learning material in addition to videoclips. Such copyright-free material can be used to create a picture dictionary on line as well. We started recording, collecting and categorizing digital photos. The picture dictionary will be available on the net for free.
