Research Abstract |
The present research project is divided into two different research fields on experimental study in structural engineering research laboratory and field investigation research. Main subjects and research results obtained are summarized in the followings: (1) Experimental studies in structural engineering laboratory: In order to investigate the following three different research subjects, a large number of experimental studies were performed in the Structural Engineering Research Laboratory of Oita University. Main objective of each study is, (a) to develop much higher seismic safety of confined brick masonry walls, (b) to investigate the seismic strengthening methods for un-reinforced brick masonry walls by using different materials and methods such as ordinary steel reinforcing bars and thin mortar layers, carbon-fiber sheets and reinforced concrete walls, and (c) to investigate the seismic safety of interlock concrete block walls subjected to earthquake loading. xtensive experimental studies, effects of many experimental parameters on the seismic behavior of different kinds of brick and concrete block masonry walls were investigated, and the all necessary information and important text results are presented in Chapter 2, 3 and 4 of the Research Reports, respectively. (2) Field investigation research: Following two different investigations were conducted during the three-year investigation periods. One is (a) to investigate the damage to masonry building structures caused by the 2001 El Salvador earthquake, and the other is (b) to investigate the structural strengthening and/or restoring methods applied to the existing un-reinforced masonry buildings in the Republic of Korea. Filed investigation results on the damage to masonry buildings by the the 2001 El Salvador earthquake are presented in Chapter 5 of the Research Report, and the field investigation results on more than eighty masonry buildings in Korea are intoroduced in Chapter 6 of the Research Report, respectively.
