| Research Abstract |
The objectives of this research are to implement systematic research on Okinawan the experiences focusing on "what can the developing counties learn from the history of health care and medical services in Okinawa" and to utilize it to establish a development education model in international health care. Between fiscal 2001-2003, 9 papers, 17 presentations in academic meetings, 3 books, audio and visual teaching material videos and 8 CD were produced by this community solidarity promotion research. The main items implemented in this research in the current year are as follows. (1) Research on Activities to provide Medical Services in Remote Areas : References and data relating to the change in the status of dispatching medical service human resources over time to non-doctor areas in the northern part of the Main Island in Okinawa Prefecture were collected Reviewed and analyzed, and the historical changes were clarified and displayed using MapInfo. n the current use of medical services by the residents of three northern Okinawan villages. (2) Research on Health Care Activity : In three types of areas in Okinawa Prefecture (urban areas, remote areas and outlying islands), a qualitative activity survey was carried out. The results are currently being analyzed. (Ambo) (3) Production of Audio and Visual Teaching Material and Production of CD-ROM : Videos entitled "Epidemiologial Transition and Administrative Measures Taken in Okinawa" and "Public Health Nurse in Okinawa" were produced as audio and visual teaching material (Chief Editor : Ogawa). The videos were supervised by each of the researchers assigned and their helpers ; they were produced by Video Pack Nippon Co., Ltd., as a JICA contractor, and were planned by JICA. The finished teaching material videos were immediately shown and used in a training course for medical staff in developing countries. A database was constructed that makes available on both a CD-ROM 1824 and the project's website photographs taken at the time when Okinawa was under the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands (USCAR) before Okinawa Reverted to Japan ; the photos are available by key word retrieval in both Japanese and English. In addition, we made efforts to make current information on our research always available by updating our research webpages. (4) Papers, Academic Meetings, Case Teaching Material and Books : In addition to two papers, six presentations in academic meetings, two books and two audio and visual teaching matenal videos (see the list of results on the next page), two training cases were additionally developed in the current fiscal year according to the case method teaching approach. Itokazu wrote "'Welcome' Delegated Doctor in Okinawa" and Omine wrote "Distress of Stationing Public Health Nurses on Remote Islands of Okinawa" as case materials and they also gave related lectures and presentations to JICA trainees. (5) Practical Application of the Research Results : The two audio and visual teaching material videos and the two case studies produced in this research were successfully utilized in training sessions in JICA's training course for Health Care Administration for Island Areas and were very positively evaluated by the trainees, who were medical service managers in the Oceania region.
