Research Abstract |
Objective: To investigate the mechanism of sympathetic nerve activity induced by therapeutic electrical stimulation (TES) in the rabbit model of spinal cord injury (SCI). Methods: The SCI model was made by cutting the spinal cord at T12/L1. The TES electrode was installed in the motor point of the right gastrocnemius muscle. On the other hand, tungsten electrodes were installed in both the right and left sciatic nerves, and the neural activity potentials of the skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSA) and the muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSA) were recorded by the microneurogram method with time. Results: We analyzed the integrated values of SSA and MSA by ANOVA. By comparing the integrated values of the MSA in the TES side with these of the non-TES side, significantly larger potentials were noticed in the TES side after 48 hours, On the other hand, we did not recognize any significant differences in the SSA values between the TES and non-TES sides. Conclusions: We suggested that the muscle perception of contraction induced by TES was conducted along the peripheral group III・IV fibers, synapsed in the sympathetic ganglia with axon collaterals from the dorsal root ganglia and affected the sympathetic nerve activity.
