Research Abstract |
Within the given study term from 2001 through 2003, we collected many hand-written documents and records relating to Uwajima Domain in Iyo province, Kochi Domain in Tosa province, Tokushima Domain in Awa province, Takamatsu Domain in Sanuki province, Tadotsu Domain in Sanuki province, Marugame Domain in Sanuki province, Okayama Domain in Bizen province, Tottori Domain in Inaba province and Hagi Domain in Nagato province. The places or institutes which we have visited and surveyed are as follows ; a society for preservation of the Date Domain Culcure in Uwajima City, preserving the Date family archives of Date Domain, Tosa Yamauchi Family Tresury and Archive in Kochi City, holding the Kochi Domain records, Aki city-run Museum of History and Folklife keeping the documents of the Goto family who was a chief retainer in Kochi Domain, Department of Historical Documents in National Institute of Japanese Literature having the records of the Hachisuka, Tokushma Castle Museum of Tokushima Domain

collecting the Tokushima Domain Records, Tokushima Prefectual Archives having the same as before Tokushima Prefectual Museum having the same as before, Kagawa History Museum keeping the documentsu of the Matsudaira family of Takamatsu Domain and Tadotsu Domain, Marugame city-run Archives having the records of the Kyogoku family in Marugame Domain, Okayama University Library keeping the documents of the Ikeda family, the the. Arranging Room for Okayama Prefectural Archives in the General Educational affairs section in Department of General Affairs Okayama Prefecture having the same as before, Okayama city-run Central Library having the same as before, the Local Materials Room in Okayama Prefectual Library having the same as before, Tottori Prefectual Museum having the documents of Tottori Domain, Yamaguchi Prefectual Archives having the documents of the Mori family. While surveying the basic raw records mentioned above, we made efforts to collect as many printed materials relating to those Domains as possible. Those raw documents and printed ones which we have collected range the wide issues as follows; the diplomacy of the Tokugawa central authority the visiting Nikko Shrine, the daimyo's alternate-year residence in Edo, the Tenno mission of the imperial Court, acquisition of the court rank and duty, law and judgement of the central and local authority, a festival of Toshogu, the succession of the daimyo family, the function of temples in thr Domain World, the regurality of the rrural and urban society, the glowing and formation of the political consciousness and thought in the local society, etc.. We read those documents carefully and studied what authority existed and acted from the upper societies to lower socities in Edo era.
