Research Abstract |
In this study, the researchers took field interviews and examined literatures and records on the subject. The study also includes an investigation of the present state of the study of Japanese Taiko Drums in junior high schools in practice, through collecting the answers from the questionnaires distributed to the Board of Education in about 700 cities throughout the country. Additionally, the researchers examined potentials of Japanese Taiko Drums as a study material in that learning of Japanese Taiko Drums sets a good example of what learning should be, and educators can make the best use of it. Moreover, leaning of Japanese Taiko Drums provides an opportunity where educators are able to build a structure of lessons with students. Through these fundamental investigations and examinations, the researchers built a hypothesis on the idea and methods when taking up Japanese sound and music as a material of musical expression. Based on the idea and methods, the researchers developed teachin

g materials and constructed a model of practical teaching. The researchers applied this model in practice to teaching elementary and junior high school students and have positively pushed the three-year-study of the model. From the implementation of the model, the researchers not only have become able to develop materials utilizable in teaching but also have become able to build the idea and methods of developing the materials. According to the reforms in the course of study indicated by the Ministry of Science and Education, department of Music Education was obliged to take up some Japanese Traditional music instruments in junior high and high school music lessons. The results of the study is thought to contribute to the change in music education in that atmospherically Japanese music education is attempting to substantiate its quantity and quality of instructing "Japanese Music," "local folklore music," and Japanese instrument." In addition, the foregoing researches have often lacked reference to both theory and methods of teaching Japanese Taiko Drums. Therefore, the outcome of this study can become a valuable framework for the Japanese music education. Less
