Research Abstract

The purpose of this research was to clarify how Germanic folkways remain today in European countries, especially in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, where people have been totally Christianized. By some field investigations in these areas, we surveyed folkways showing old Germanic features, and analyzed them theologically and iconologically. The objects these investigations in fiscal year 2001-2003 areas follows.
Fiscal 2001 : Fastnacht (carnival) in Elzach, Freiburg and Offenburg, Germany.
Fiscal 2002 : Fruhlings fest (Spring festival), Maifest (May festival) and Georgsritt (Saint Georg's Riding) in Haslach, Nurtigen and Ochsenhausen. Weinfest (wine festival) in Rhein, Mosel, Germany.
Fiscal 2003 : Inscriptions on the walls of old houses in Celle und Goslar, Germany. The market on the Nativity of Vergin Mary in Ordenburg, Germany. Folkways in Salzburg, Alpbach, Lech und St.Anton, Austria.
Some archievements of these investigations are open to the public on the website "The Database of Religion and Folklore" (the representative : Teruhisa Tajima). In addition, with analysis of the icon 'Baptism of Christ', we succeeded to show an example of the process of the Christianity's adaptation to Europe.
