Research Abstract

High radiation levels in future high-energy physics experiments such as in LHC or J-PARC accelerators are one of key issues, and this is also true in space science. On the other hand, LSI technology is a mandatory in these experiments for dealing with large number of readout channels and local processing. Unfortunately commercial LSIs are not always radiation tolerant, so we need to study the radiation effects of the LSI.
In this research program, we study radiation effects to the LSIs, andaimed to search methods to improve radiation tolerance without using special silicon process which is far expensive to use in scientific purpose.
We have measured radiation tolerance of AMT (Atlas Muon TDC) chip which we developed for muon detector of ATLAS experiment. We have done radiation test with gamma-rays from Co^<60> and proton beam from cyclotron. The AMT chip was fabricated in CMOS 0.3um process, and has time resolution of around 300 ps and can measure timing of input pulses without deadtime.
We certified the radiation tolerance of the AMT under LHC condition, and the chip are being installed into giant ATLAS detector. with this achievements, the AMT chip is also a candidate for use in a scientific instruments in BepiColumbo Mercury observation mission which will be launched in 2012 from ESA (European Space Agent).
