Research Abstract |
A new type of a fiber ring laser with a SOA (semiconductor optical amplifier) has been developed which is applicable to a novel fiber sensor. The laser contains a SOA as the optical gain medium which also acts as polarizer, fiber collimators, and Faraday rotators. Introducing a birefringent medium in the laser cavity results in a frequency difference between the counter-propagating oscillations in proportion to the birefringence. When a fused quartz cell was introduced as a sensing medium, in proportion to applied pressure a shift in the frequency difference was observed, which suggests that this laser is a promising frequency-domain fiber sensor.
