Research Abstract |
Engineering structures often include periodically connected same parts. Though most design of such coupled multiple degree-of-freedom structures is based on linear analysis, if the coupling is nonlinear, they can show more difficult but interesting phenomena such as mode interaction, spatio-temporal dynamics and complexity. High-temperature superconducting levitation systems, achieving stable levitation without contact support, are expected to be applied to flywheels and linear-drives. As one modeling of such application systems, we consider a magnetically coupled multiple degree-of-freedom system consisting of several permanent magnets and superconducting bulks, in order to examine nonlinear dynamics of a coupled system. Compared with coupled structures with mechanical contact forces, it can easily show, due to small damping, complicated motion caused by nonlinear interaction between levitated magnets and superconducting bulks. We applied POD (Proper Orthogonal Decomposition) to time series data obtained by experiments and numerical analysis, and found some change of spatial coherence between all the oscillators, which is accompanied by qualitative change of each oscillator's motion due to bifurcation.
