Research Abstract

Experimental and analytical study on beam-column joints was carried out in order to obtain the behavior of RC frame in a large displacement. In this research, interior beam-column joint in plane frame was chosen as the subject of the research topic.
For preparation to the study, the statistic study using the past experimental data was done to establish the judgment criteria for the failure mode of beam-column sub-assemblages. The judgment procedure was not defined, but some important parameters were pointed out. The shear input to the joint has a large influence in the failure mode of the joint that was failed in joint shear after beam yielding. And further consideration was also carried out with combining other parameters such as bond condition of beam bars.
Experimental study was carried out using half size 10 specimens, which had cross-shaped and eccentricity between beam and column. These specimens had differences in beam bars (joint shear input), joint reinforcement and eccentric di … More stance. The objectives of this experiment were to obtain the influence of eccentric distance on the shear strength and behavior. The result showed that the larger the eccentric distance the smaller the joint shear strength and the effective joint width should be defined with considering the failure appearance of joint concrete.
Analytical studies were carried out using non-linear finite element analyses, one of them was the 3-dimentional analysis on the shear failure mechanism of eccentric beam-column joint and another was 2-dimentional analysis on the influence of bond condition of beam bars on the joint behavior after beam yielding. The former analysis showed that the eccentric distribution of the compressive and shear stresses in the eccentric joint concrete elements caused the local failure of the concrete, whereas there was uniform distribution in the concentric joint. However, the strength decreased more gradually in the eccentric joint than in the concentric joint, because the concrete elements located on the offset side became effective resistance after the ultimate stage.
