Research Abstract |
We investigate the histopathological changes of the fundus in aged male rats of WBN/Kob strain to ascertain whether proliferative diabetic retinopathy is induced or not. Severe hyperglycemia and glucosuria lasted from 10 months to 24 months of age in male rats. In male rats, the vitreous body was partially or entirely filled with fibrous tissue corresponding to the grossly white mass on both sides. The newly formed vessels remarkably increased within the fibrous tissue in the vitreous body. In non-diabetic females, these changes were not seen. WBN/Kob rats are likely to be one of the diabetic animal models for progressive diabetic retinopathy and may provide further informations to cause of retinal angiogenesis.
