Research Abstract |
Multi-color display systems, such as navigation system or route guidance system, have been used as information terminal in automobiles recently. In these systems, LCDs or CRTs are widely used as a display device. However, the ways to determine the luminance for color images do not necessarily meet the automotive visual environment. In this paper, we have examined short-time legibility of the images under comparative low contrast conditions, which are important most in evaluation of display systems. The experimental result suggests that luminance data, derived from relative visual sensitivity characteristic, of the multi-color images are not sufficient to realize good legibility. It also shows that spatial frequency characteristic for each color image is rather important factor to obtain good performance. We have also verified a cognitive model to explain legibility of an arbitrary color images using spatial frequency characteristic each color component involved.
