Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本年度は、これまでの本研究の成果を「市民社会と政治社会の間：インド、ムンバイの市民をめぐる運動の人類学」と題した研究論文にまとめた。2000年代のムンバイでは、都市の美化運動、官民のパートナーシップの推進、反腐敗運動などの活動が興隆し、これらの運動を牽引する「市民社会（civil society）」が注目を集めている。規範的概念である「市民社会」という対象に人類学的に取り組むために、本研究では、市民社会を分析枠組みとして用いるのでなく、この概念自体の現地への受容や流通の過程を考察した。具体的には、サバルタン研究を踏まえ、「政治社会（political society）」との関係から市民社会を考察した。サバルタン研究は、市民社会を西洋の啓蒙主義に基づく自律的な市民の領域と位置づけた。そのうえで、インドで重要なのは、市民ではなく「統治される者」たちが、共同体の論理を活用しながら、主権者に対して要求を行う「政治社会」であると論じてきた。こうした背景のもと、インドの市民運動は、自らを政治社会と区別し、「非政治性」を主張しながら活動を展開している。
先行研究は、1990年代の経済自由化により、消費者としての「新しいミドルクラス」と彼らの政治運動である新しい市民運動が台頭したと論じてきた。これに対して本研究は、マリリン・ストラザーンによる「部分的つながり」の概念や、南アジアの人類学における「分人（dividual）」と再文脈化の概念を参考にしながら、市民運動がどのような要素のつながりから成り立っているのかを記述した。そのうえで、ムンバイの市民をめぐる運動は、ポジションとカウンター・ポジションを行き来しながら、その狭間を概念化し、可視化していることを明らかにした。さらには、そうすることで、運動が狭間に留まることを可能にしているということを論じた。
