Outline of Annual Research Achievements

平成27年1-3月にコペンハーゲン大学のLasse Riemann教授の下で次世代シーケンサーを用いた窒素固定生物群集組成解析法を学んだ。本年度はここで分析されたデータを解析することにより、南太平洋の東西亜熱帯海域の窒素固定生物群集組成を明らかにした。同時に観測されたセジメントトラップで得られた沈降粒子と基礎生産の結果から、窒素固定生物群集組成が貧栄養海域の生物ポンプ(生物を介した深海への炭素輸送)の効率を決定していることがことが示唆された。自由生活者であるTrichodesmiumやCrocosphaeraが主要な水塊では溶存有機物の濃度が高く、窒素固定生物以外の植物プランクトン(特にProchlorococcus)の現存量が増加していたが、生物ポンプの効率は周辺の水塊に比べて減少していた。TrichodesmiumやCrocosphaeraは固定した窒素の大部分を排出することが知られており、そのために再生生産が高まっていたと考えられた。一方、共生性のUCYN-Aが優占する海域では生物ポンプの効率は増加していた。UCYN-Aが固定した窒素はそのホストに効率よく使われることが知られているが、この生物ポンプ効率の増加はそのような窒素の使われ方が関わっていたと考えられた。窒素固定生物群集は貧栄養海域内でも環境によって大きく異なることが知られている。地球上での貧栄養海域の大きさを考慮すると、将来的な窒素固定生物群集の変化は全球の炭素循環を変えてしまう可能性がある。
