Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
My PhD research project "A case study of Nepali migrant workers in Japan" will examine the unique characteristics of Nepali migrants working as cooks in Nepali restaurants in Japan, who are categorized by Japanese immigration authority as "skilled labor (cook)". There are already more than a 500 Nepali restaurants in Tokyo, and that number is still increasing. Based on my research plan, I have been in Nepal to conduct my research fieldwork in April 2015. When I was conducting the fieldwork in Nepal, the devastating earthquake hit Nepal in 25th April and 12th May 2015. In the earthquake disaster, I got injured and have lost my fieldwork data as well as fieldwork equipment, however I luckily survive. My house, located in Dolakha district Nepal has completely collapsed due to the earthquake. Because of this unexpected circumstance of the earthquake I could not collect fieldwork data as my research planed. I have again conducted fieldwork in Nepal (Kathmandu and Malma village) for a month (October 2015) to recover my fieldwork data on the migrants’ families’ situation in Nepal. Finally, I have almost completed my fieldwork and task of collecting data. However, I could not write my thesis in the last year because of the earthquake disaster. I was suffered from PTSD (Post Trams Stress Disorder) and still could not concentrate on writing the thesis. I have attended at fives international conferences/workshops/seminars to present my research findings. Using the fieldwork data, currently I am writing my PhD dissertation. I am planning to complete it by next year.
