Research Abstract |
Direct dating of a potsherd itself has been investigated for ‘fiber-tempered pottery'. Contaminants alone can be removed when a suitable moderate condition of chemical treatment. About 60 potsherds of the Earliest and Early Jomon period have been dated. The measured values of δ ^<13>C were about -25%o, and C4 plants have not been used as a organic temper. The impression of fiber, remained on the surface or inside of the potsherd, was observed by SEM using the replica method. The fiber was seemed to be various types and conditions. Shell and charcoal remains excavated from the same layer as pairs were measured and compared. According to the sample of the shell midden in the Sanriku district, the ages of the shell samples are 200-300 years older than those of charcoal fragments. The dates of shell samples should be calibrated with the regional correction value(ΔR). Shell specimen were selected in the old shell collection of the University Museum, the University of Tokyo, and dated.
