Research Abstract |
As a result of extensive and methodical research of various historical documents relating to the people who were involved in the management of Toji-temple during the medieval age, several important documents were collected and photographed. These include various versions of "Toji-Choja-Bunin", "Bonso-Bettou-ki", "Ato-ke Densei Shiryo" (Kyoto National Museum), "Toji Shigyo Nikki" (Tenri Library) and "Toji Kakocho". In depth evaluation of the nature and validity of these documents, which had not been done in the past, was carried out. 1.Methodical research on various versions of "Toji-Choja-Bunin" was done. This revealed the nature and level of validity of each version and resulted in the identification of the actual writers of some of the text. 2.Regarding "Toji-Shigyo-Nikki", it was found that the text in the collection of Tenri Library is more reliable than the commonly relied upon version in the collection of the Japanese Cabinet Library. 3.Research carried out on "Ato-ke Densei Shiryo" resulted in the confirmation of the actual historical order of each "Shigyo" and in addition, the original hand written text was transcribed. This research shed light on the actual role and responsibility of the position of "Shigyo" and revealed some new findings. 4.Evaluation of several versions of "Toji Kakocho" was done and this led to the determination of the nature and validity of each text. Continued evaluation of the collected documents will be carried out and there is a plan to publish the transcription of "Toji-Shigyo-Nikki".
