Research Abstract |
Recently, Greek/Roman History tends to be more orientated towards cultural, sociological studies than before. The new history treats the poetical works or the philosophical ones as parts of the historical sources, or even documents. Its stimulation given to the traditional 'readings' of these works is great, but at the same time it is not rare that the new 'readings' astonish conventional scholars. At the same time the old types of History of Literature/Philosophy prove to be out of date. It is no good to arrange the works chronologically without any consideration of their social environment in which a literary work was appreciated. This research is an attempt to investigate the possibility of inter-disciplinary studies in 'Greek/Roman History' : not only by the historians but by the scholars in literature and in philosophy, those who are attached mainly to the University of Tokyo. It was, in fact, made up of a series of discussions and seminars. These are a few of necessities for a new history of literature/philosophy. It is important to investigate particular conventions derived from the genre which a work is attached to. It is also important to follow the development of the genre. Structural analyses and historical ones do not stand in dichotomy. Attention should be paid more to historiography, for the historical works themselves are written under the influence of particular points of view and not free from biases.
