Research Abstract |
1)Topography-dependences of land-use and forest-use were investigated for Miyazaki Prefecture. The electivity of intensive forest-use was clarified in relation to topographic variations with consideration of local specific situation. 2)An empirical model for estimating site productivity was developed using topographic and meteorological factors. The predicted results were compared with ground truce data obtained by field survey to validate of the model. This model provided decision-support information for site classification from the view point of forest productivity. 3)An empirical model for predicting large scale disturbances in forest landscape was developed by GLM using geological meteorological and topographic factors. The model was applied to natural and plantation forests under the same geological and climatic conditions to evaluate the change of disturbance regime induced by logging and establishing even-aged plantation forests. This result provided decision-support information for site classification from the view point of preventing natural disasters. 4)Potential habitats of beech and evergreen oaks, which are the typical components of the natural forests in Kyushu, were investigated to provide basic information for site classification in terms of biodiversity conservation. Based on these results, reallocation strategy of semi-natural forests into a plantation-dominated landscape was examined by simulating the conservation efficiency for endangered native tree species with different scenarios. 5)Ecological site classification system was constructed by concerning site productivity, disturbance regime and biodiversity based on the derived decision-support information. A new methodology for the long-term strategic zoning at a regional-scale and the short-term strategic zoning at a local-scale were developed by a hierarchical approach
