Research Abstract |
(1) When a person senses they are slipping while walking on a surface, there is initially a decrease in leg joint extension. Then, second, there is an increase in the activity of the leg muscles during the stance phase. And then there is the sensation of insistence representing the last phase. (2) From the quantitative analysis of the leg muscles' activity of 30 healthy adult subjects during the level walking, the discharge patterns of the ankle, knee and hip joints were classified into two types each. (3) The muscular activity levels in the legs of 76 elderly subjects, aged 60 to 85 years old, during level walking and while standing up from sitting in a chair were calculated quantitatively. The resulting data show that the independent level of the leg muscles for the gait used their own feet. (4) The muscular activities of the legs were analyzed during normal walking on four different walking surfaces (floorboard, 10cm-deep, sandy soil, stones the size of an adult's fist, and artificial turf) using the seven different foot conditions (bare foot, with their own sports shoes, with mules, with scuffs, with Japanese sandals, with wooden clogs and high heels). The function of the ankle joint muscles were shown to be very important for the prevention of falling accident.
