Research Abstract |
The four regional cities of Sapporo, Sendai, Hiroshima and Fukuoka have rapidly grown up since the 1950s in Japan, in spite of the concentration of national population into the three largest metropolitan areas. In addition, the hierarchical connections between regional cities and other prefectural capitals have been strengthened through the agglomeration of branch offices of nation-wide companies. This was a phenomenon to characterize the urbanization of the latter of the 20th century in Japan. However, after the latter half of the 1980's, it began to be different of vigor among four regional cities. Additionally, the agglomeration of the branch offices that played the role of engine of the growth of regional cities had decreased in the latter half of the 1990's. industry, finance, insurance, and transportation and the communication industry. These industries were matured industries in Japan. From these, it can be interpreted that the emphasis of investment, was shifted from the country to foreign countries among large enterprises in the progress of an economic globalization. Therefore, it is not thought that the branch agglomeration expands again greatly even if business will recover in the future. On the other hand, the regional cities have made efforts to attract visitors through expansion of tourism, entertainments and conventions. The development of high-speed transport links such as highways and airline routes enabled the visitor's increase. However, there is a large difference in the ability to invite more visitors among four regional cities. The ability to attract more visitors of Fukuoka is the largest among the four cities. As a background of that, Fukuoka has a relatively large volume of customers of Kyushu region, and a positional advantage in making linkages with other Asian countries. Less
