Research Abstract |
Detailed study of an effect of hiragana (Japanese syllabary) above kanji in TV captions or subtitles on understanding of TV scenes of news events by foreign people who know little Japanese has been conducted. Comprehension tests of TV scenes were done by showing two categories of captions, namely (a)captions in regular writing, where kanji and hiragana appeared in a mixed form, and (b)captions with hiragana ruby, where all kanji s had hiragana ruby above them. Total of twenty-five foreign people from seven countries and one region participated in the comprehension tests. Thirteen people are from a country or a region where kanji is used in daily life. The other twelve people were from countries where kanji is not used. Total of eight test scenes of two categories mentioned above as (a) and (b) were used for the comprehension tests. In order to evaluate effectiveness of announcer's voice on comprehension of captions, seven participants saw the test scenes and heard announcer's voice at the same time. The other eighteen participants saw the same scenes with the announcer's voice totally muted. Comprehension tests have shown that all participants, regardless of their native languages, understand captions in regular writing better than captions with hiragana ruby. Announcer's voice has little effect on the test results. This is a surprising result. Further study is necessary to confirm that the results obtained by this research can be applicable to other scenes such as dramas. The other theme of this research is to find an effective transmission method to carry additional information in broadcasting media. Some preliminary study has been conducted on array antenna configurations. I have succeeded in reducing the side lobe levels by 10 dB.
