Research Abstract

It is remarkable that 'Pyramus and Thisbe' in Ovid's "Metamorphoses", one of the most influential classical sources for Renaissance art, is very often depicted in Northern art in the sixteenth century. The purpose of this research is to construct a database of Iconography of 'Pyramus and Thisbe' for the basic study to examine this theme.
The database is based on data from the photographic collection of the Warburg Institute in London and 'Mannheimer Ikonographische Repertorium zu den Metamorphoses des Ovid' of University of Mannheim and added also data from the another references. Works of art for the Database are painting, print, sculpture and applied art from the twelfth century to nineteenth century. The database contains now 242 examples that are divided into 6 categories : 1. Cycle, 2, Thisbe flees from lioness. 3. Thisbe's suicide, 4. Thisbe finds Pyramus, 5. Miscellaneous, 6. Combined Iconography.
Collected examples show that the number of works in northern art is indeed more than Italian especially in the sixteenth and seventeenth century. It could be said that 'Pyramus and Thisbe' is a classical theme that was explored characteristically in northern art. The database is useful not only to compare examples of 'Thisbe's suicide', the most typical iconography, but also to examine the rare one. The database will be continued to be developed and opened to the public online in the future.
