Research Abstract

The aim of this study was to examine effect of visual vs. semantic context in visual object detection. Participants detected a target from search stimuli which contained either eight (Experiments 1 and 2) or four (Experiment 3) common objects. Objects were represented either as pictures (Experiments 1, 2 and 3) or as words (Experiment 1). The target and other stimuli were semantically similar or semantically different. The target was also similar in shape with other stimuli, or was different in shape with other stimuli. The results of Experiments 1, 2 and 3 showed that picture targets were detected more quickly if other stimuli in search stimuli were semantically different with the target, or they were different in shape with the target. These results indicate the interference effects of both of visual context and semantic context in picture detection. The same interference effects were found in Experiment 4, in which search stimuli contained two common picture objects. Participants also detected a target from search stimuli after looking at a picture or a word as cues in Experiments 2, 3 and 4. The results showed that there were no differences between picture cues and word cues about the interference effects of visual vs. semantic context in search stimuli.
