Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to clarify differences in the relationship between grandchildren in elementary school and their grandmothers based on a sociocultural background of Confucian ethics. With both grandchildren and grandmothers in Japan(Tokyo and Okinawa) and Korea(Seoul and the suburbs) as participants current analyses revealed the following 8 points. 1 : In all areas, grandmothers as well as grandchildren perceived 4 functions of grandmother's role, "transmission of customs and Traditions", "socialization", "a secure base", and "housekeeping". 2 : These grandmother's roles were highly perceive in all areas from the lower one to order Tokyo<Okinawa<Korea. 3 : Grandmothers in Okinawa more highly evaluated themselves as "transmission of customs and tradition" and "housekeeping" for grandson of son's side than for grandson of daughter's side, and for granddaughter of daughter's side than for granddaughter of sun's side. 4 : The "transmission of customs and tradition" role of gra

ndmother in paternal lineage were highly evaluated by grandchildren in Seoul, but low by grandchildren in Tokyo. 5 : Grandmothers perceived that close bond with their grandchildren promoted their personality development. 6 : With regard to a norm that a grandchild must help the grandmother to the extent the grandmother expects the grandchild to do so, there was an independent relationship between grandmothers' expectation and grandchildren's sense of obligation of the norm in Tokyo, while positive relations were found in Seoul. 7 : The relationship between grandmother's role and a norm for helping the grandmother obviously differ in Tokyo and Seoul. That is, in Seoul both grandmothers and grandchildren who more highly evaluated "socialization" function of grandmother's roles more highly respected the norm. 8 : With regard to the relationship between grandmother's roles and grandmother's subjective well-being, in Seoul, grandmother who more highly evaluated herself as "socialization" function reported better subjective well-being.
