Research Abstract |
The synergistic extraction of metal ions with an acidic chelating reagent and a neutral ligand has been widely investigated. It is generally concluded that although the extraction efficiency is greatly improved, the separation efficiency becomes poor in the synergistic extraction. On the other hand, the enhancement of the separation efficiency has been found in the synergistic extraction with the specific combination of an acidic reagent and a bidentate neutral ligand, but only a few extraction systems with the similar phenomenon has been reported. The present project dealt with the synergistic extraction system of rare earth elements (REs) having higher separation efficiency in the new combination of β-diketones and bidentate neutral ligands. In the synergistic extraction of REs with a β-diketone containing a trifluoromethyl group, 2-thenoyltrifluoroacetone (Htta), large synergistic enhancement was observed by the addition of a diketonedioxime derivative which has not been almost researched in synergistic extraction, and the separation among some REs was improved. The synergism with a high molecular weight β-diketone having the trifluoromethyl group, LIX 51, was also investigated. A high molecular weight β-diketone containing no halogen atom, such as dibenzoylmethane(Hdbm) and LIX 54 was used as an acidic reagent with little soluble loss to the aqueous phase. In the synergistic extraction of REs with Hdbm in the presence of diphenyl and dimethyl derivatives of 1,10-phenanthroline, the synergistic effect roughly increased with the atomic number of the light-to-middle REs, and decreased with a further increase in the atomic number of the heavy REs. The influence of the substituent of the neutral ligand is small. The separation factor among light REs is larger than that in the extraction with di-2-ethylhexylphosphoric acid (D2EHPA), which is well known as one of the extractant giving the largest separation factor among REs.
