Research Abstract |
In this research, three types of a new electrostatic liquid filter that utilizes both a. c. and d. c. electric fields, which has been proposed by Yanada, were manufactured on an experimental basis. Two filters are cylindrical in shape and one has a rectangular cross-section : Those three filters consist of the coagulating part, where an a, c. electric field is applied to make minute contaminant particles be coagulated, and of the capturing part, where a d. c. electric field is applied to capture the particles. In the cylindrical filters, the coagulating part is arranged on the outer part of the cylinder and the capturing part in the inner part of the cylinder. Only the difference in the two cylindrical filters is the flow direction in the coagulating part, that of one filter is the direction of the axis and that of another one is circumferential. The difference in the flow direction in the coagulating part leads to a difference in the magnitude of the velocity gradient in the passage there. The rectangular filter was manufactured to examine the effects of the shape and arrangement of the collector and electrode in the capturing part on the filter performance. It is shown that the filtration speed can be approximately doubled by utilizing both the a. c. and d, c. electric fields compared to the case where only the d. c. electric field is used, and the usefulness of the electrostatic liquid filter proposed is demonstrated. The comparison between the performance of the two cylindrical filters shows that the magnitude of the velocity gradient in the passage in the coagulating part strongly affects the filter performance. In addition, it is shown that the filter performance can be increased by appropriately designing the shape and arrangement of the collectors and electrodes in the capturing part.
