Research Abstract |
Formation of flow in pump consisting of several micrometer ring electrode and several micrometer disk electrode was difficult because the disk electrode prevented electro-hydro-dynamical(EHD) pump flow within several micrometer channel. So that, the pump consisting of tens of millimeter ring electrode and disk electrode of diameter of 100mm was used for experiment. In a horizontally transmission pump in which ring and disk electrodes are arranged in a parallel in the horizontally direction, liquid was pumped from the disk with a week field to the ring electrodes with a strong field under an oxide of the disk made of copper, so the electrostriction force is the pivotal pumping force and apparently acts on the liquid. The vectors of gradient force of electric field in case of applying voltage of 10kV at the ring electrode of EHD pump composed of the ring electrode and the disk electrode were obtained by numerical calculation. The gradient force of electric field is strong near surface of

the ring of side of the disk. So that, it appers that the velocity is fast near surface of the ring of side of the disk. EHD pump flow was formed at 134 msec after the voltage. After the disk was grinded, the working fluid such as HCFC-R123 flowed from the cathode to the anode under the change of the polarity of the applied voltage. In this case, the pumping force seems to consist mainly of Coulomb force by interaction between the dissociation ions of HCFC-123 under the strong electric field intensity and the nonuniform electric field. In an intravascular EHD pump consisting of several millimeter ring electrode and several millimeter ring electrode arranged in insulating narrow tube, which was developed prior to an EHD micropump, liquid flowed from the cathode to anode regardless of the polarity of the applied voltage in the absence of the corona discharge. This result indicates that the Coulomb force generated by dissociation in liquid due to strong electric field is the pivotal pumping force. The correlation between the electrode configuration and the pumping force was studied by using various shapes and sizes of electrodes for EHD pumps. Less
